The Stephen Strasburg era has begun.

The kid lived up to the hype. He was flat out dominant despite giving up a 2 run homerun in the 4th he still managed to strike out 14 in 7 innings. He threw only 94 pitches for the night. Yes, I know this was against one of the worst teams in the National League but this was a kid making a debut with the eyes of the entire country on him. The atmosphere was electric all night. His stuff was just electric. Whether it was his fastball which reached triple digits on the gun or his filthy breaking ball he kept the Pittsburgh Pirates and homeplate umpire Tom Hallion on their toes the entire night.

This kid really does have a chance to be something special. It's a shame that Mark Prior got hurt at a very young age because he had all the potential for a great career. Hopefully Strasburg can stay healthy and fulfill the hype. I can't remember the last time I was this fired up for the debut of someoen who didn't play for my one my teams. I'm going to have to time my July D.C trip with one of his starts. He's going to sell tickets everywhere. Hey Cleveland, buy tickets NOW for Sunday.

I don't doubt the kid is a great prospect, but this is all about east coast bias. If he was in Milwaukee or Kansas City there wouldn't be half the hype over him there is now. Some goof on ESPN said this morning

"you have to stop whatever you're doing, and watch every pitch he makes"

No I don't.

Uh...this has has nothing to do with East Coast bias. This kid is the real deal. Did you watch him pitch yesterday? Everyone laughed when Schilling said this kid could be the best pitcher in the league right off the bat....but guess what this kid proved that the statement may very well be true.

It has a lot to do with East Coast bias. If he pitched for a team off the east coast he would not have got this wall to wall coverage from ESPN and others. That's just the truth and every honest person knows it. Did Lincecum get this kind of hype? Did Prior? Did others? No.

I am not disputing how good he is, I am disputing the ridiculous coverage.

Prior and Wood definitely had the attention. Even Lincecum to a lesser degree. It is a different world now then it was even 5-10 years ago. MLB Network didn't exist back then. Things didn't go viral like they do now with twitter being a factor. This kid was talked about before the draft last year. It didn't matter where he landed he was going to get the hype.

I agree. Prior was absolutely hyped (biggest rookie contact of all time at that point). Woods was also hyped, and the only reason Lincecum wasn't quite so hyped is because he's a stick figure, and people questioned his durability.

i find it hard to believe that Woods was all hype when he struck out 20 'Stros in 1998. although his career stats may not look awesome, he is a 2-time all-star, led the cubs to 4 post-season appearances.

strausburg did look great, but let's not put him in Coopertown just yet.

Also, there was a lot of hype on Greinke, and he's in KC.

When i say hyped, i mean noticed. As in people knew about them already.

I'm glad that you mentioned Mark Prior. I live in Chicago & follow the Cubs. Kerry Wood - same thing. I wish this kid the best of luck. They say his mechanics are flawless, and that should save him from arm injury. We'll see.

I was a big Prior fan. I visited Chicago in 2002 and actually bought a Cubs tee with Prior's name and number on the back from right outside Wrigley Field. Have that shirt to this day.
