I just had to update my post from earlier tonight. Those who know me have known for years that I don't like the Heat (goes back to the Mourning days), don't like Pat Riley, don't even really care for the NBA during the regular season all that much but I absolutely love this move. July 2010. It has been marked on NBA calendars for years. The outcome is now finally clear.
This will be one great 1-2-3 combination with Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh. I don't understand the people criticizing LeBron's decision here. He just proved that he did care about winning more then a max contract or the spotlight. How can anyone question his motives here? James and Wade on the perimeter along with Bosh will make whoever is with them much better. I love how the Cavalier fans are being hypocrites about this. They keep talking about loyalty but they would have been just fine with Bosh or Wade joining their team. Would they have cried about loyalty in that scenario? Sports are a business. Free Agency is part of the business. Deal with it.
I don't understand people saying that this team won't win. We criticize athletes all the time for being about the money but here are 3 of the top guys in league taking less money to play together. When was the last time 3 guys this good and this young got together in any sport? Veterans will sign for the league minimum to play in Miami and ride their coattails to a championship. Would anyone be shocked to see someone like McGrady play for the minimum there?
I've been telling for a few years that he does not have to come play in New York to "build his brand." This is 2010, not 1970. Sports games are televised around the world. Jerseys and shoes of athletes like LeBron are sold around the world. Does anyone seriously think that Nike will have trouble selling "Witness" Tees in Miami? Heck, does anyone think they would have trouble selling those if he had signed with Memphis? It's a global age. Games are everywhere, highlights are everywhere and the merchandise is everywhere. Lets stop with the archaic view of the sports landscape.
He won't be "the guy" on Miami. Aside from Alex Rodriguez, how many guys come to mind who have willingly moved to another team to share the spotlight when they could have been the face of their own franchise? Basketball fans for years have said that he only cares about himself but here he is reportedly on the verge of going to Miami to share the spotlight with not one but two superstars. How does that make any sense? He's putting himself into a position where he can win championships for the next couple of years. Would anyone really be surprised to see veterans like Tracy McGrady sign up to play for the NBA minimum in order to win a championship with this group? This is the perfect situation for LeBron. He can sign a short term deal (or a deal with an out clause) and possibly go to the Nets in 3 years when they move to Brooklyn?
