VIDEO: Leader J.R Hildebrand crashes on final turn of Indy 500

I have watched a lot of open wheel races in my life but today's Indianapolis 500 definitely provided one of the craziest finises ever.
I was flipping back and forth between the race and the French Open all afternoon and thus missed the news that Danica Patrick was low on fuel when she took the lead. It is a shame she is going to NASCAR because I am more of an open wheel race fan. Would have loved to see her win.

How can you not feel bad for 23 year old rookie J.R Hildebrand? He was leading the race on the final turn of the race when he crashed into the wall trying to pass a car that he was about to lap. What a shame.
Where does this crash rank all time in sports history? I can't recall ever watching something similar. It is surely one of the biggest choke jobs ever right? Heck, it probably is a bigger choke job then Rory McIlroy at The Masters this year.

Sadly, here in the Indianapolis area the race broadcast is blacked-out. This year was the first race I've missed since '83.

A true heart-breaker for Hildebrand. Was hoping an American would win this year. Still the greatest spectacle in racing.

Why was it blacked out in Indianapolis? I am a big fan of open wheel racing. I love Formula One as well. Have never been able to get into NASCAR.

It seems the Hulman's don't wish to show it live within 125 miles of the track. It's always been that way. I, personally, don't believe it would hurt attendance at all, but, it is what it is. That is why I usually go.

NASCAR is pretty good here. That race is not blacked-out. But, that is because NASCAR runs it. The Hulman family owns the track and own all the rights to all broadcasts of the 500. Even local news must leave the track at the start of the race. All video you see is filmed by Indianapolis Motor Speedway personnel. Even radio broadcasts.

If you haven't ever been, it shoud be on your bucket list. It, truly, is a fantastic experience.

Wow. That is news to me. I wasn't aware of that at all. Will have to read into that some more. I complain a lot about blackouts/tape delayed broadcasts over on my blog.

A trip to watch the Indy 500 is definitely on sports bucket list.

Generally, if an event is "sold out" it is not blacked-out. However, the Speedway never, actually, says their event is sold out. And it may not ever be. But, there are now 350,000 seats at the

Speedway and there are seldom any huge blocs of empty ones. I love going to the race, but, the best seats are still at home.

I have tickets in the start of the first turn. So one can see the cars come out of the fourth turn, down the straight away, enter the first turn, down the short chute and begin to enter the second turn. Very good seats, though not the premier ones.

Besides the race there is so much to see. Just watching the people is entertainment.

However, in the old days.....pre-'90's. It was much more interesting. With the "snake-pit" where nudity was prevalent. Ha. I've been going since a kid in the '50's. The history of the track is fantastic. The museum is terrific. The Hulmans spare no expense in keeping the facility clean, fresh and friendly. Anytime a car happens to hit the wall, they paint over the scrape fairly quickly. I never stop being impressed with the place.

We used to spend the whole month of May going to the track. Skipping school. Even quitting jobs. Ha. Now days, it is such an abbreviated schedule, it isn't a month long deal.

I hope you can attend some time. You won't be sorry.
